Confirmed from Amy Weingartner Branigin Peninsula Preserve's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Nature preserve featuring hiking trails, fossils, and a beach.
What runners say about Amy Weingartner Branigin Peninsula Preserve
“The end has some beautiful views of Lake Monroe as well as a place for a fire or to hang some hammocks.”
Only open during the week and such a nice trail. My husband and I both really enjoyed it along with our dog. The end of the trail splits. Not sure where the right side goes but we took going to the left and then walked along the water and came back the same way. We saw a fox too!
Great place to take a hike. It's an easy there and back. It has a few hills but overall pretty mellow trail. The views of the lake are well worth it. Lots or fossils and cool rocks.
This is inside of a residential neighborhood, so you do have to be mindful that there are people walking on the road with their pets and such. Also, there are only 7 or 8 parking spots. If the lot is full DO NOT park elsewhere. You might be towed.
Fantastic short hike. A tiny bit hilly, but nothing a person who has done hiking before can't handle. The views are really nice, and the trail is well maintained. Keep in mind that there's only 8 parking spots, and if you get there and the lot is full, you're basically out of luck.
Trail conditions & character
“The end has some beautiful views of Lake Monroe as well as a place for a fire or to hang some hammocks.”
“If you walk along the beach towards the trailhead on your way back, it shouldn’t be hard to find a path that can get you up and back to the trail.”
“There are some hills but nothing too unbearable, it took about 30 minutes one way with some stops to enjoy the scenery along the way.”
“Loved the trail … but my husband, three dogs and I, all had ticks crawling all over us.”

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking, water — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
