Confirmed from Annie's Canyon Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (2,156 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 15 mentions

“If you like bird watching you should definitely go there as there were many birds and even if you don't like bird watching its still a very fun and scenic hike.”

👟 good for all levels 3 mentions

“All in all, a memorable family-friendly hike with gorgeous views, easy trailhead access, and a fun canyon section that makes it feel more special than a typical short hike.”

I’ve lived in San Diego for over 10 years, and I can’t believe a place like this exists here. It’s absolutely amazing. The narrow canyon walls and unique rock formations make the hike feel very special and different from typical trails in San Diego.

Very short but difficult slot canyon, with very good views and once you walked up all the way to the top you could see a very pretty view of the ocean. If you like bird watching you should definitely go there as there were many birds and even if you don't like bird watching its still a very fun and scenic hike.

This is a beautiful hidden gem! Try to get there earlier to avoid the crowds. Wear sunscreen and bring lots of water. Dogs can not go through the narrow walls but there is an option to use the other trail to get to the top without having to go through the narrow passages, which is labeled moderate. Beautiful scenery.

★★★★★ — Danielle , Feb 2026

This hike took about 50 minutes to an hour from parking and back. The trail has a few gentle ups and downs, but it’s very manageable and makes for a great light workout. Overall, it’s an easy and enjoyable hike that’s perfect for first-timers.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

Plan your run at Annie's Canyon Trail

The practical stuff

  • AccessDawn to dusk — the gates close, so do not plan a run that finishes after dark
  • SurfacePaved — asphalt or concrete. Fast and predictable, runnable year-round, and fine with a stroller
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
  • Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
