Confirmed from Arc of Appalachia's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

“From the moment you step foot on this sanctuary, you'll be taken on a journey through the wildest, most beautiful landscapes you've ever seen.”

“All the trails are well marked and maintained.”

Highland's Sanctuary, (Arc of Appalachia) is one of the most beautiful woodlands in Ohio! Lots of wildflowers are there. On Cave Road alone, there are numerous hiking trails. The ones behind the forest museum, I believe are the most scenic! Barrett's Rim Trail is a must hike too!

Super fun! Interesting short hikes with caves! There are some huge spiders inside the caves and the cave gets pretty tight, but don’t worry cave is not long, don’t be scared to go all the way in, trust me no one is going to eat you there and it’s not scary haha totally worth it!

Oh yeah! Step into the ring with the Arc of Appalachia and Highlands Nature Sanctuary, brother! Let me tell you, this place is a slammin' paradise for all nature enthusiasts out there. Ooh yeah!

Very cool place for a short hike not recommended for small kids and not accessible. Some stairs. But other wise a walk in old growth forest and a very cragy river bed with some caves

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessHours vary — hours are not posted for this trail, so check before an early or late run
  • SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
