Confirmed from Athens West State Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Venue offering a kids' playground, dog park, multiple baseball fields & access to biking trail.
What runners say about Athens West State Park
“It's a peaceful area with 2 separate play areas for your kids, and a shelter house they can be used for birthdays.”
This review is for the Athens dog park by the West Union ball fields, not to be confused with the East State Street dog park behind the pool, Holiday Inn Express, and by the waste water treatment plant.
Hard to find dog park: As you enter the park, look to the left, right past the bathroom and park between the first ball field and the bathroom and there is a trail to the dog park.
A nice dog park. Plenty of space for them to run around and have a good time. I like that there are obstacles for the pups to play with. My dog definitely enjoyed those. I did have a little trouble finding it initially.
This listing is for the dog park, and it is that, but there are a lot of other things in this park. There is access to the bike trail, recreational equipment, community gardens, a river, an access point for kayaks, and baseball fields. There is plenty of parking, but I feel like it is out of the way for some people.

“Better than the other park on State Street, though it looks like it can be pretty muddy, but nice trees and benches to sit as well as obstacles for the dogs.”

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
