This trail has changed a lot since the fires in 2024. They brought in bulldozers and made fire breaks you can now hike on. You can go left or right at the trail head. I recommend to go right and follow the trail up to the top where you can again go left or right.
This is a good trailhead for Bell Peak, and Los Pinos Peak if you try harder. No shade though, which makes it harder to hike in summer.
This is a wonderful trail with many options like : short hike, challenging hills , sightseeing , wild flowers , wild life , quick workout , day hike , shaded and sunny . Saw lots of hawks , an owl , a deer, and a lot of bunnies . The Pond after the 1st switch back is full of Frogs .
Always a nice hike. Not too difficult. You do have to watch out for people with their dogs off leash and think that their dog is the best dog ever when it is not. Had a couple incidences with said people when out with my dog. And watchout for landmines. People in that area don't like to pick after their dog.
