Confirmed from Big Butte Open Space Recreation Area's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (178 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 6 mentions

“Beautiful Trails for Mountain biking or hiking, The M Trail is beautiful once you reach the top”

I mountain bike here at least 2-3 times per week. Fantastic smooth, flowy single track. Beautiful wildflowers in the spring and early summer into July. Awesome views of the surrounding mountains, and sunsets are spectacular! Another bonus – never seems crowded.

★★★★★ — Peder , Aug 2023

There are a number of trails that circumnavigate Big Butte and travel down into Whiskey Gulch. You can drive up to the lower base on the "M" (or "V" ). The road closes at dusk to vehicles. There is a beautiful view of Butte from this vantage point. You can see from Wallerville down onto the flat.

★★★★★ — Rich , Jul 2020

Great, well groomed trail system! You're very exposed with little to no shade but breathtaking views of Butte.

★★★★★ — Amber , Jul 2022

Great place to hike, walk a dog, or ride a bike. This area is adjacent to Montana Tech, which has a folf course and fledgling mountain bike skills park. Classic Montana views and a great view of the city at night.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

Plan your run at Big Butte Open Space Recreation Area

The practical stuff

  • AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
  • SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
