It's a great trail and overlooks Butte. There's always some folks with unleashed, untrained dogs that believe other hikers should tolerate their turds and ignorance.
This loop hike is right around 4 miles total with an elevation gain of around 1,000 ft (5,500 - 6,500). It's a nice single track that could be utilized for mountain biking as well. Great for wildlife viewing; I saw several different bird species, including Magpies.
Great access to the East Ridge and Continental Divide Trail. Vault restrooms and ample parking. I've hiked it in the winter. It's a great trail for hiking and the views are amazing. The trail intersects the old Northern Pacific Rail, which will take you either into Butte or up on the Divide to Homestake Pass.
Interesting trail with a mix of terrain and views. There are a couple of stunning views of Butte and you can see “Our Lady” from the trail which was a nice treat. There’s nothing too strenuous here and most people should enjoy the hike.
