Confirmed from Black Creek Nature Sanctuary's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Nature preserve featuring hiking trails, a beach, and dunes.
What runners say about Black Creek Nature Sanctuary
“While it does take about 40 minutes to hike to the beach, it is well worth the gorgeous Lake Superior views!”
“The signage is very clear and well marked.”
“Great place to visit if you are interested in a quiet and secluded beach day!”
“The superior beach trail branch was a fairly easy hike, and had a great rock hounding beach.”
Incredible trails. Rocks on the beach are unmatched. I got lucky enough to have the whole shoreline to myself in early June. Don’t pass this place up!
One of the best trails i have been to. The end of the trail is a beautiful beach full of crazy stones. If you go at the right time, you can have the whole beach to yourself. No waves and still water feels calm and peaceful. Good place of you plan to camp here.
A nice, not to long of a hike, to the shoreline of Lake Superior! A decent spot for agate hunters.
Beautiful park. Real hiking here, not a stroll to the beach. 2 miles to the beach and 2 miles return back by the most direct route, but if you plan, pack a lunch and your water, it's fantastic once you get there. It's not flat, sand dunes, hills, up and down, and exposed roots...
Trail conditions & character
“While it does take about 40 minutes to hike to the beach, it is well worth the gorgeous Lake Superior views!”
“Need to be in good physical condition to manage the trail's few steep areas, navigating the tree roots that serve as "steps" on very narrow sections of the path.”

The practical stuff
- AccessHours vary — hours are not posted for this trail, so check before an early or late run
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
