Confirmed from Capitol Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Public park with mature trees & extensive lawns standing in the shadow of the Capitol Building.
What runners say about Capitol Park
“The Maine Capitol Park is quiet and clean (we were there around 6pm of a Wednesday) 👍 It's worth passing by and being able to rest awhile (on our way to North Conway NH) 😉”
“That said, it's a beautiful, expansive park with a well maintained walking/jogging path and tables for lunches.”

Awesome experience watching Christians from all over Maine cone and worship Jesus!!! May 26th, 2024 Beautiful this time of year!!! I l9ve walking around this place!!!
Absolutely beautiful place. We drove from Detroit to Bangor (16 hrs) and stopped here to have our lunch out of the car. It is just a field surrounded by picnic tables, benches, and a path. Our toddler enjoyed running. It was so gorgeous, and everyone we encountered was extremely nice.
This spacious park has plenty of space to walk around, have a picnic, or play lawn games. Other walkers and joggers were sociable and friendly. As an added bonus, nearby signage by "Museum in the Street" explained events related to the American Civil War that happened in Augusta.
This was an incredibly pleasant place to walk. And I was rather impressed with the park etiquette. Everyone I passed made eye contact and smiled before carrying on their way. Beautiful park and very large. Plenty of room for everyone
Trail conditions & character
“That said, it's a beautiful, expansive park with a well maintained walking/jogging path and tables for lunches.”
“Many people will walk their dogs along the path as well and it is right across the street from a playground.”
“The lack of public restrooms in the area is a drawback, especially if you're bringing younger children or need the restroom yourself.”
“There is a clear, level, gravel path to walk on and benches to sit on along the route.”

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- SurfaceCrushed gravel — the rail-trail classic: softer than asphalt, still smooth enough for tempo work
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadrestrooms — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
