Confirmed from Carlsbad Caverns National Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Well-known national park famous for its limestone caves, rock formations & hiking trails.
What runners say about Carlsbad Caverns National Park
“The expansive cave system is breathtaking, with massive chambers, stunning formations, and plenty of time to explore at your own pace.”
What an experience! If you enjoy natural history and caverns, this is the site! $15 a ticket. Plan for about 3 hours to walk entire cavern unless you take the elevator first, down into the cavern. We walked from the beginning and took about 3 hours due to stopping and reading information panels.
Oh yeah 👍🏻 this is a magnificent adventure 🥳 It's breathtaking! I've been to more than two dozen caverns and caves in this country alone and a couple in other countries. Walking into the natural entrance is amazing.
Must visit place if you love natural rock, cave formations. One needs to spent good amount of time, at least 3hrs, to explore formations and understand. The big room is full of surprises and awestruck structures. There is a small natural trail outside to explore the Desert view.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park is absolutely incredible and well worth the visit. The expansive cave system is breathtaking, with massive chambers, stunning formations, and plenty of time to explore at your own pace. The self-guided cave tour is only $1 per person, which makes it both accessible and affordable.

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
- At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
- Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
