We have not been able to confirm the surface, distance or shape of Castle Island yet from its own listing, the park's website or runner reviews — so those cells stay blank rather than guess. What is below comes straight from the listing and from reviewers' own words. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Site of Fort Independence (open in the summer), with beach, picnic & jogging areas.
What runners say about Castle Island
“I liked learning about the history of the fort and seeing how well maintained the grounds are.”
“The fort is really cool, offering free tours (schedule pending), and the view of the harbor and boats is beautiful.”
“Absolutely love running here!”
“A lot of people come here for their daily jogging or to walk the dogs.”
Saw a guy wearing a Minutemen uniform saying a settlement needs our help. Jokes aside, I went there on a relatively hot summer day for a walk, and the cool air coming from the ocean is refreshing. The walk around the castle and seeing the planes landing and taking off from a distance is engaging.
Beautiful place to go for a long walk. You can walk around the fort which is surrounded by water and can have amazing views of ships departing the ports as well as planes landing in the Logan airport..There were many people sailing boats, canoeing and just having a good time...
An amazing half a day trip. Can walk from Downtown and it took me 1.5 hours. Tried soft serve at the Sullivan’s and it was simply amazing. A lot of sight seeing historical places there ans with a good weather, it’s an amazing picnic spot. It was not very crowded. But 9, 11 serve the locations.
My family loves it here! Sullivans offers a decent lunch for a fair price, the playground was a hit with my youngest. The fort is really cool, offering free tours (schedule pending), and the view of the harbor and boats is beautiful. The plans taking off and landing at the airport makes it an even cooler spot!
Trail conditions & character
“The views around Castle Island were quite nice - roads were sufficiently large enough with sufficient seating by the islands.”
“There is lots of parking but I am sure on a nice sunny day the parking might be more difficult.”
“Hot dogs and fried clams, and a great fish sandwich at Sullivan’s, and don’t forget the ice cream.”
“Heavy population due to beach access, walking trails and historical markers with beautiful peaceful view”
