Confirmed from Deer Island's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
This historic park offers miles of trails, picnicking & tours of its wastewater treatment plant.
What runners say about Deer Island
“You wouldn’t think a circumnavigation of a sewage treatment plant could be a beautiful walk, but around this plant it is.”
“Interesting place to visit, full of history and good to work out, it also has a very small beach not crowded and good for tanning.”
I would give this place 5 stars except for the airplanes which I guess are not really its fault. I ride my bike here on occasion and take a spin around the island. Very clean, and quiet location dominated by the treatment plant. Cool views of the City over the water. A nice place to take a summer walk by the sea.
Interesting place to visit, full of history and good to work out, it also has a very small beach not crowded and good for tanning. I did it running, walking, bicycle and the views of Boston are spectacular. Recommended for family, friends and everyone else who wish to spend a great time.
Love this park. Gorgeous mix of terrain. Lots of neat historical info and context about the Island/surrounding area. Folks are respectful at picking up after themselves and pets. Parking is very limited, carpool if you are a group.
Deer Island is a really beautiful place to go for a nice long walk with a family bring your pet bring some lunch prepare for some exercise you can bike ride rollerblade amazing place to visit the views are phenomenal

“Just make sure you get there early in the day (think 8 or 9 AM) if you're driving, the parking spots go FAST especially when there's good weather.”

“Paved trail, lovely benches to sit and there were several porta potty along the trail.”
Plan your run at Deer Island
The practical stuff
- AccessDawn to dusk — the gates close, so do not plan a run that finishes after dark
- SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking, water — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
- Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
