Confirmed from Cowles Mountain's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Cowles Mountain

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (725 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 5 mentions

“Cowles Mountain is a beautiful and popular hike with great views of San Diego once you reach the top.”

🌳 shaded & cool 4 mentions

“I wouldn’t suggest going in the middle of summer since there’s absolutely no shade and the heat can be intense.”

A very nice and challenging trail. Not for beginners. I walked 7.3 miles, and would recommend bringing lots of water and hiking sticks for people that have a hard time walking up and down hills and crossing over rocks. There were some diamond back snakes as well, but they didn't look too big. I recommend 10/10.

Trail is very rocky, hardly any shade and quite steep in places. It took us 70 minutes going up. That includes several stops for me to catch my breath. On the beginning of the trail there are 2 big signs to please not take your dog if it’s hot and if you do to watch out for signs of heat exhaustion and so on.

Moderate hike with some beautiful pandemic views 📸 ! Did the hike up to Cowles Mountain (2.8 miles round trip) and then over to Pyles Peak Summit (made it 5.6 miles round trip). I'd plan 90-100 minutes for the round trip to Cowles Mt (~45 minutes up, ~45 minutes down, and 10-20 minutes on top).

I have an affinity and love for Mission Trails. The trails are well cared for, and you couldn't ask for a more accessible location. It's impressive how this natural park can be situated smack in a central location to just about anywhere in San Diego, yet maintain its natural beauty and feeling of isolation.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🏞️ Scenic views 17 mentions

“Amazing views from the top - all of San Diego, including downtown and ocean, La Mesa, Santee and El Cajon.”
