Confirmed from Croton Gorge Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Scenic park featuring trails for walking and hiking and kayaking on the Croton River.
What runners say about Croton Gorge Trail
“It is a trail with ample space, lots of wooded areas and great views to the river.”
“The sound of the water going over the falls is just so beautiful and peaceful.”
“Nice easy walk between Black Rock Park and Silver Lake swimming area.”
Easy "hike", more of a walk. Great for families, kids and pets! Great views and awesome scenery. Highly Recommend.
Also known as the Old Croton Aqueduct trail, this trail stretches from the New Croton Dam, through Westchester County, through the Bronx, over the High Bridge, through Central Park and finished at the New York Public Library.
While the path is paved and the views are stunning. It was quite difficult to find it 😅 I ended up making a trail of my own until I stumbled across the actual trail. My only complaint is the lack of signs to lead to this trail. Would be nice to have a posted sign for new comers.
Easy river kayaking for about a mile, then a great spot for swimming. Drive through and past the croton train station for parking and out in. You'll see turtles and the.occasional heron and eagle. Avoid low tide and holidays.

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
