Exquisite, peaceful walk under mature 60 foot oak, maple and pine trees along trails studded with ferns and mossy rocks. In the distance, the off line Shoreham nuclear power plant is visable, painted torquoise and sky blue, a minimal intrusion to the perfect natural landscape . A lovely north shore treasure.
It's the pine barrens and gets a little monotonous scenery wise. Many sections are too thick with brush to head off trail. Ticks are rampant. Lots of wintergreen and blueberry bushes. Some very pretty areas scattered about amidst the pines. Lots of shed antlers.
I run the trails here. Hilly and fun. Red is 4 mile loop and red to white to yellow to red is roughly 6/6.2. Great route.
This preserve is a bird sanctuary with many different species. Easy terrain and well marked trails. Open dawn to dusk.
