Confirmed from Donner Summit Canyon's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Hiking area featuring well-marked trails and scenic views, including an overlook.

“Nice dog-friendly and not very crowded trail with lot of shade.”
“Lots of places to stop with wife well marked trails”
“I would consider this an easy hike, but obviously you are slowly ascending up the summit most of the time.”
I always love this trail. It is always reliably well maintained and it has some nice views. Has a gradual climb that doesn’t put too much stress on you. Overall a nice hike.
I have hiked these trails for 42 years and never been disappointed in the wonderful vistas.
Easy hike, mostly covered by trees. Wide well groomed path with signs at junctions
This is a review of the Donner Summit Canyon Trail. I had a blast with my 10 year-old daughter. The sceneries are breathtaking. It was quite an adventure: there are hardly any signage of the trails, like no kerns or paint on trees. Even the bridges are nameless.
Trail conditions & character
“A lot of snow, about a foot of snow on the bridge, and thin spots where you can sink, but the views and nature made it an amazing walk.”
“The bonus is - it is not nearly as crowded as anywhere in Lake Tahoe, not traffic to get here and we didn't have any problem at finding a parking space.”
“Nice dog-friendly and not very crowded trail with lot of shade.”
“Great trail; not too difficult, enjoyable granite rocks to climb over and a beautiful area.”
“Lots of places to stop with wife well marked trails”
“The handful of dogs that we met were unleashed but well-behaved and under close supervision.”

The practical stuff
- AccessDawn to dusk — the gates close, so do not plan a run that finishes after dark
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
- At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
