We have not been able to confirm the surface, distance or shape of Dragon's Back Trail yet from its own listing, the park's website or runner reviews — so those cells stay blank rather than guess. What is below comes straight from the listing and from reviewers' own words. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Dragon's Back Trail

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (10 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

You take Route 550 to Cabezon Road and drive for about four miles on a dirt road to get to the trailhead. The parking lot has ample spaces and there's no fees. The trail starts about a 4-minute walk from the lot. The hike itself goes for about seven miles, out and back.

★★★★★ — Alex , May 2025

The colors and geology along this trail are magnificent! The sound and sometimes the smell of the nearby gun range detract a bit from the natural beauty, but that just brings it down from a 6/5 to 5/5. The trail was wonderful in mid-March with bright sun, a 10 mph breeze, and a high around 60°F.

We came from MN to ride in NM. This trail was exactly what we were expecting and wanted. Had good flow and very scenic. Definitely recommend.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
