Confirmed from Essig Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Essig Park

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (233 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

well-maintained 12 mentions

“Dog owners variable in keeping their pets out of the people area as posted, and then don't clean up the dog logs they leave behind.”

🏞️ beautiful scenery 4 mentions

“One of the most beautiful and well-kept dog parks in the country.”

🌳 shaded & cool 6 mentions

“The grass could be a bit better tended in winter, and lighting/more seating/some shade would be greatly appreciated.”

🐕 dog-walking favorite 3 mentions

“Has a playground, dog park area, walking path, and I think frisbee golf?”

A nice neighborhood park, with the bonus of a dog park. A smattering of play equipment for little kids and a pair of unisex bathrooms. Grass quality only OK, but this is the desert. Dog owners variable in keeping their pets out of the people area as posted, and then don't clean up the dog logs they leave behind...

Excellent view of the desert and mountains. Very clean and beautiful grass in the midst of the desert. Tons of room for the pups to run around and burn off some energy.

★★★★★ — Jake , Oct 2021

Fun Park for children. Plenty of grass. Great climbing structures. Dog park nearby. There is a walking path that goes around the park and you can walk while the kids are in view. I wish they would add trees and shade structures for the kids. The dogs have 13 or so trees. Kids area has only one shade tree.

★★★★★ — Tim , Oct 2024

Fun for Kids and Doggies too. Awesome view of the lower city and plenty of space to run around. But the best part...CLEAN BATHROOMS and it even has soap dispensers with soap. Idk about anyone else but it's rare to see that at parks now a days. Definitely a new favorite for the kids.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🐕 Dog-friendly 40 mentions

“We saw some children playing on the playground with their children, and people bringing their dogs for the dog area.”

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfacePaved — asphalt or concrete. Fast and predictable, runnable year-round, and fine with a stroller
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
  • At the trailheadrestrooms, water — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
