Confirmed from Farm Island Recreation Area's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Farm Island Recreation Area

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (133 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

well-maintained 8 mentions

“The campgrounds are very nice, well maintained and most spots are fairly spacious.”

🏞️ beautiful scenery 5 mentions

“It was a beautiful evening sitting by the water.”

🌾 quiet & peaceful 7 mentions

“The rest of the park is great, fishing, river swimming, biking trails, boating, and quiet.”

I want to give this place 5 stars but the rv park is electric only. The rest of the park is great, fishing, river swimming, biking trails, boating, and quiet. This place is nice. Only downside is for out of stater who must pay a 15$ a day or 60$ a season in addition to the 30$ a night.

A delightful find! Campground is just a short drive East of Pierre and is located on a lake. Quiet and serene. Has awesome walking/running trails and large open areas. We had a back-in space #18 next to the lake that had 30amp electrical.

Great place for not only camping but also swimming, fishing, geocaching, hiking, photography, and just all around enjoying yourself! Some of the warmest waters around the Pierre/Ft. Pierre area. One of the best places I know for panfish. Some awesome geocaches can be found out this way.

The campgrounds are very nice, well maintained and most spots are fairly spacious. A bit disappointed in the island trails. The main loops are great, but did not expect the loops to the ruins to be mere foot paths.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🚻 Restrooms 8 mentions

“The Campground is very well-maintained and the restrooms were spotless clean.”
