Confirmed from Farrell's Marsh Wildlife Area's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Farrell's Marsh Wildlife Area

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (128 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

well-maintained 5 mentions

“The trails aren't very well maintained and there's no official parking, but the benefit is that it's not as crowded as it would be if this were a more planned park.”

🌾 quiet & peaceful 5 mentions

“Calm and relaxing place to walk around it was surprisingly clean and quiet very pleasant!”

🐕 dog-walking favorite 3 mentions

“The Dogs would love it also just clean up after them because we all know how frustrating that poopy situation can be!”

What a wonderful little trail! With loops under 1 mile total, and right here in Steilacoom, this is the perfect spot for an outing with the kids out just getting outside. The majority of the trail is dry, with only a few soggy spots. We especially liked the water viewpoints, great for a snack break.

Be forwarded Farrell's Marsh is located in the center of about three different housing communities. It's posted a 24 hour park, so if you enjoy night hikes, I would advise doing direction research first to one of the other additional trailheads.

Lots of small side trails to explore, and a really cool swampy pond. As the name suggests, there's a ton of wildlife and you'll hear birds, birds, and more birds as the soundtrack to your walk.

★★★★☆ — Matt , Mar 2018

Great secluded trail for being in the middle of some random neighborhoods. Instead of going far to find nature, these trails may be in neighborhoods but feels like you're in the forest once you enter. Perfect for animals. Well maintained, bark path. Nice little pond with wildlife around.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
