Confirmed from Great Allegheny Passage - West Newton Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (35 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

“Beautiful place to stop if you re in the area.”

Lots of parking to access the trail, and nearby shops to get a bite to eat or buy provisions. Check out the cool statue near the main road.

This place is very convenient. There is plenty of parking place, different options for a food. If you have time, walk around the town a little bit. It seems to be pleasant. There is a small GAP trail shop at the former railway station. I bought a book about the passage there.

Beautiful part of the bike trail to walk on! Lots of interesting things to see the further you go! Loved the views of the river and the wildlife!

★★★★★ — Jill , Apr 2025

This is written covering the GAP Trail from Homestead to Smithton which includes West Newton area. This 33 mile section is exceptionally well maintained. On my 2 day bike trip I witnessed several volunteers ensuring the trail was at its best. There are places to purchase food and beverages at Boston and West Newton.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
