May wildflowers unlike ANYWHERE I have ever been. I am so amazed by this trail and wish I could live closer— I’d be a frequent flier. I saw many beautiful migratory birds including a magnolia warbler and I heard a wood thrush (beautiful sound). The phlox smelled so sweet and the woods were very fragrant.
The Heron Rookery is a nature preserve along the East Arm Little Calumet River. Parking at both ends of the trail. It's basically a 1.5 mile one-way trail along the river. Interesting hike but RUGGED. Several places where you could fall 15-20 feet off the trail and into the river. This is not a leisurely family hike.
The Heron Rookery is a natural gem located in the middle of farm country in northern Indiana. It is part of the Indiana Dunes National Park. Although the herons moved on to other locations, it is still a beautiful three mile hike overlooking the Calumet River. It is a well marked trail and is pretty in any season.
Good place to take a walk, but be prepared for mosquitoes. The trail is ~ 1.7 mile end-to-end. A lot of it is very narrow, you can’t walk side by side. The whole trail is in the woods, so don’t need to worry about sunblock
