Confirmed from Heron Rookery Trail Auxiliary (West) Lot's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Beautiful trail full of wildflowers blooming like red and white trillium, jack in the pulpit, wild geraniums. Saw orioles, warblers, and heard about 8 different kinds according to 5he Merlin app.

★★★★★ — Jim , May 2025

Woodsy little trail along a bend off the Little Calumet. Lots of mosquitoes, so definitely prepare. It’s easy, scenic, and very relaxing to hear the water and see the fish as you hike.

★★★★★ — Megan , May 2023

Incredibly buggy throughout the trail. Incredibly muddy at a few spots. I did not see any big birds. I heard a lot of little birds, singing and chirping. The highlight was hearing a snarl as I was walking along and seeing three very young raccoons on a tree, which was pretty cool.

★★★★☆ — Matt , Jun 2026

The Rookery is always a fun and short hike. It's maybe a 3 mile round trip on the same narrow path. Spring and summer are buggy, but beautiful. Enjoy fresh air, exercise and fun...just do it!

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
