Confirmed from Hiking trail, Rappahannock's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Hiking trail, Rappahannock
“This one gets a good review because although poorly maintained, the area around is so, so beautiful”
“25 miles and they have some mile markers out there but i only found the 0.”
I cant believe there arent more reviews of this trail. its pretty standard as trails go with lake Mooney and the water plant to the north and the Rappahannock to the south. I went down the main trail to where rocky pen run and the rappahannock connect and did a little exploring on the way back.
Very nice trail that splits out several times. If you follow the pink bands eventually you'll come right out onto the river, it just abruptly ends. Awesome area, not super traveled at all, I think most people just head to Lake Mooney to take their boats out. Beautiful trails though, definitely worth checking out.
The markings must have decayed. I hiked this off mental memory; there were several branches which later turned out to be loops. I may have missed a loop but went around 2 loops for 2 miles of hiking. This one gets a good review because although poorly maintained, the area around is so, so beautiful
I looked for this on AllTrails, but couldn't find it. There are, apparently, 3 trails of this trail head; I found 2. It's not well marked and there are a lot of tripping hazards. Of course, that didn't stop me from going and when I have more time, I will explore now 3.

The practical stuff
- AccessHours vary — hours are not posted for this trail, so check before an early or late run
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
