Confirmed from Hillsboro Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Shaded 4.5-mile-long trail for walking, running, biking and dog-walking.
What runners say about Hillsboro Trail
“Great, clean, and it's really serene with it being mostly covered by trees.”
“Great for walking/running as well as biking or walking your dog, they have water provided but sometimes it can run out just keep in mind.”
“Nice, wide trail, shaded a good part of the way, good hills for a little heart rate kick”
As good as a trail can be. Plenty of sights to see, has a good path for walking dogs, jogging, biking, all of your trail needs. Nice and long, just like we all like it. Great opportunity to relax or work out. Would go through plenty.
Great for walking/running as well as biking or walking your dog, they have water provided but sometimes it can run out just keep in mind. The trail is next to a bunch of neighborhoods as well as the high school and middle school.
Great, clean, and it's really serene with it being mostly covered by trees. the whole thing is about 4 and a half miles long. my only complaint is the lack of a bathroom anywhere but honestly it's not q big draw back.
Fun place to ride a bike. The off path trails have some technical aspects, but if you stay on the concrete you will be fine. You can also venture into the Hillsboro and Old Cahaba neighborhoods for sidewalk riding.

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfacePaved — asphalt or concrete. Fast and predictable, runnable year-round, and fine with a stroller
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
- LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
