Confirmed from Homewood Forest Preserve's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Homewood Forest Preserve
This is a great little hike right in Homewood. It’s about a half mile loop with some elevation on a narrow / deer trail and a great, quick hike. I took my 11, 9 and 7 year old daughters and we had a blast. We will go back. There is a new entry right by the speed limit sign on South Lakeshore so be aware of that.
Very nice hike! There were a couple of areas on the trail where trees had fallen and you have to make your way over them. Keep that in mind when you hike here! Wildflowers were putting on a nice display!
Great hike for the kiddos and interactive info about trees along the way inspired our next learning to be on trees and forests.
This is a nice little loop. There is some elevation change. 9/9/2024 There is a tree down blocking the path towards the beginning, going clockwise (lower trail).

The practical stuff
- AccessHours vary — hours are not posted for this trail, so check before an early or late run
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
