Confirmed from Hunterdon County Sourland Mountain Preserve's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Hunterdon County Sourland Mountain Preserve
“Well maintained, beautiful trails.”
“Limited parking ensures the trails are not crowded.”
Marked trails with different terrains. Mostly dirt and gravel with some light inclines and rocky terrain.
Well maintained, beautiful trails. A bit wet and muddy. Limited parking ensures the trails are not crowded. Not much elevation change but yellow and white trails require some hopping across rocks to cross streams. Main trail good for people with limited mobility.
Part of a great network of trails. The main trail looks to be an old macadam road so it is plenty wide and not too wet. If you go on the side trails they take you to great diabase rock formations. Some might be muddy but we didn't think too bad.
Great trails, but too many incidents with unleashed dogs and their oblivious owners.

The practical stuff
- AccessDawn to dusk — the gates close, so do not plan a run that finishes after dark
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
