Confirmed from Joseph Whidbey State Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

“It's small, but they have beautiful trails including one that runs right along the beach, and views of the Olympic mountains as well as the other San Juan Islands.”

One of our favorite spots on the island. It's small, but they have beautiful trails including one that runs right along the beach, and views of the Olympic mountains as well as the other San Juan Islands. We use the picnic areas and fire/grill pits regularly.

★★★★☆ — Abby , May 2019

There is a forest path on the side of the beach, so it is a cute place with forest roads, fields, and beach beaches. The trail is a loop trail that comes back to its place just by walking without thinking, so it's a very good and flat path to walk.

★★★★☆ — Kai , Aug 2023

Great place to go and see nature. There is a beautiful trail through the woods, the beach, picnic tables and a spot with picnic tables and a roof. There are also grills. Bring your own wood if you want to use the grills. There is also drinking water access and a not so great public toilet.

★★★★☆ — A , Aug 2023

Easy walking. Trails. Rocky shoreline. Picnic area and bathroom facilities available. The location beyond the picnic area is not handicap accessible and the route to the picnic area is a little steep.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

Plan your run at Joseph Whidbey State Park

The practical stuff

  • AccessDawn to dusk — the gates close, so do not plan a run that finishes after dark
  • SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms, water — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
  • Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
