The main loop thru the refuge are the two roads 281, and 222c. 281 is all paved. 222c is dirt, and can have mud or pools of water. It'll be passable in any car, just be prepared for the different road conditions.
I hiked the Gallinas Nature Trail and it was great. Check the photos of the box canyon. However the fish and wildlife website seems to have an error. The website says the trail is 1.75 miles, but their map states 1.27 miles. "Section 1" shows 1.24 miles from the parking lot on CR C22C.
Hiked the Gallias loop and it was really fun! Seems like a plain dirt trail at first but as you go into the canyon it becomes a fun winding path through increasingly complex rock paths.
Beautiful area not far from town. We saw a kestrel, mountain bluebirds, meadowlarks, sandhill cranes, ducks, and ravens. We came back at sunrise the next morning and saw a large herd of elk close to the road. I wish they provided more walking paths to get down closer to the lakes.
