We have not been able to confirm the surface, distance or shape of Pecos Wilderness yet from its own listing, the park's website or runner reviews — so those cells stay blank rather than guess. What is below comes straight from the listing and from reviewers' own words. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Protected area of rugged mountains & canyons, with waterfalls, wildflower meadows & fishing lakes.
What runners say about Pecos Wilderness
“Beautiful ride through to Bandelier National Monument.”
Backpacking: We started from the parking lot of the ski resort and made our way up and then down to Lake Katherine where we camped over night. The next day we hiked up Mt. Baldy. This hike was 17 miles round-trip. If you decide to visit, do it in October when the Aspen forests are changing color. Great place.
The Pecos Wilderness is a heavily forested rugged mountain land; ranging from 8,400 to over 13,000 feet in elevation. Truchas Peak, at 13,103 feet, is the second highest point in New Mexico.
There is a special and unique beauty to this place that is hard to describe without witnessing it firsthand. A backpacking trip from the south to north end of the wilderness is an amazing experience with days spent hiking for miles above treeline.
Amazing! Winsor trail 254 is very nice, I enjoyed every mile of it, pure nature, wild life, incredible views, forest changes as you go on, very fresh and clean air, hundreds of spots for nature/landscape photography, a lot of hikers even on Tuesday! Loved this area a lot, it’s enormous!
Trail conditions & character
“Be sure to hike to Truchas Lake for a view of the massive granite face.”
