Confirmed from Locust Gap Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Locust Gap Trail
Stumbled upon this by accident when we took a wrong turn, but it was a happy accident. Nice trail that is great for a dog and offers wonderful scenery in a tree-canopied trail.
Nice trail with multiple stream crossings and some small ponds. Connecting with Hosack trail and the Appalachian trail makes a fun loop. Going through Dark Hollow gets a little steep. If there has been much rain, stream crossings can be challenging.
Great loop when combined with a short stretch of the AT. I like to do this hike after work before dark. Some steep elevation on the AT leg. Beautiful mountain Laurel tunnels along the way.
Awesome location, one of my friends who lives locally, guided me in a loop trail hike of this area which included the shelter. Best looking shelter on the Appalachian Trail, hands down.

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
