Confirmed from Mackworth Island State Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

👟 good for all levels 3 mentions

“It’s a relatively easy walking loop around the edge of the island with coastal and forest views aplenty.”

Just a gorgeous location not far from Portland. As many have noted, the parking is limited, so get there early. It’s a relatively easy walking loop around the edge of the island with coastal and forest views aplenty. The fairy houses are cute and abundant. If you have children they will likely love it.

★★★★★ — Jason , Aug 2024

Nice trails that hug the rugged coast line of the island. Beach access is available for the sure footed. Not recommended for small children or elderly to reach the majority of the beaches. Best options for families is just down a well maintained path near the parking lot.

★★★★☆ — Chuck , Jul 2020

This island is a fantastic spot for a day trip. You can enjoy a leisurely walk, take in the various scenic viewpoints, and have a picnic by the ocean. It's also pet friendly.

★★★★★ — Elbert , Jun 2024

Easy and accessible trail loop with great views of the water and spots with secluded beach access. Some picnic tables and benches around the loop as well. Limited parking so get there early in the day and it’s $4 per person for non Maine residents.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
