Confirmed from Malibu Creek State Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Rugged state park in the Santa Monica Mountains with hiking trails & a rock pool swimming hole.
What runners say about Malibu Creek State Park
“The campsites do not have a lot of privacy but they are clean and have paved parking and each site has it's own firepit!”
“Absolutely gorgeous park… if you’re camping in December don’t forget to pack for 30 degree nights … it can get brisk in the mountains!”
“The most peaceful place to hike and recharge yourself, surrounded by beautiful nature, the sound of the river, birds, and bunnies.”
Site #52. Small campground tucked into a spectacular setting. Lots of wildlife, had deer wander to the edge of our site. Miles of hiking trails in the park. We hiked to the M*A*S*H filming site and also explored the filming sites used for the 1968 classic Planet of the Apes.
Nice state park with hiking and swimming opportunities. I would highly recommend swimming at Rock Pool especially on a hot day. Unfortunately I wasn’t aware of that so I didn’t bring any swim clothes. Overall nice mountain views and great volunteers and info at the visitor center.
Abundant parking. Beautiful views and very easy and nice trails. Nice waterfall with varying amount depending on rainfall. Has a nice information center with local native history and taxonomy of local flora & fauna.
The most peaceful place to hike and recharge yourself, surrounded by beautiful nature, the sound of the river, birds, and bunnies. I love the energy and peace of this place.🤍 It also has rock climbing that people usually come and enjoy. Unfortunately, there’s less flowing water and greenery during the summer.

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking, restrooms, water — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
