Confirmed from Mapleton Canyon's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Mapleton Canyon

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (64 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 7 mentions

“Beautiful place to go hiking and enjoy the outdoors.”

🌳 shaded & cool 4 mentions

“The paths are wide, clear, and well-kept, with lots of shade along the way.”

🌾 quiet & peaceful 4 mentions

“This trail is refreshing and peaceful.”

I'm a little bias, as I grew up next door to this canyon, but I love it! It's my "everyday hike." If you go past Whiting Campground, there's a gentle trail that forks at the stream. Go right to climb to the peak (6+ hours), go left for a more easy-going hike along the stream.

This is one of my favorite hiking trails. It does get pretty busy on weekends. Great place to escape the heat of the valley for a hike for an hour or an entire day if you want to reach the summit of Spanish Peak. Dogs, horses, mountain bikes, and motor bikes are allowed on the trail.

Pretty enjoyable easy hike. Some parts have unavoidable water that you will likely end up with wet shoes. (at least when i went, so check on conditions before you go)

We love our morning walks up this beautiful canyon. Lots of fun neighbors as well. Give it a try!

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
