Confirmed from Massabesic Trails' own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Had a lovely time at the trails. First time visiting and brought kids and a dog. Ended up enjoying a 6.1 mile hike around. Plenty of trails to bike and hike that are easy enough for little legs of all kinds. Found lots of lady slipper flowers along the way and the bugs weren’t bad at all.

Beautiful, well-maintained trails going on for incomprehensible distances in various directions. I’ve not even gotten to explore a meaningful fraction of the trails and side-routes available and I’ve already gathered tomes of pictures from all the beautiful nooks and crannies it has to offer.

This place is amazing! There are soooo many trails to walk on. Main trails which are wide for horses, bikes, strollers, wheelchairs ect.. and some off trails that go into the woods, perfect for hiking and mountain biking ect..

Easy walk with some moderate hills. There are several different locations where you can walk along the cliffs to enjoy the lake view. There are also many different locations to park along the road. I was surprised how quiet it was (people wise). I went with my two boys (10&12) and a pug; none of us had any issues.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

Plan your run at Massabesic Trails

The practical stuff

  • AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
  • SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
  • Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
