Confirmed from Merrell Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Merrell Trail
“The trail seemed pretty well maintained, with trail workers out and about fixing up features.”
First time up here and the one direction was very difficult! I did not ride as many laps that day to say the least but a fun, challenging trail to ride!
Unlike any other trail you will find in Southwest Michigan. Better buy the Super Tampons because the flow here is HEAVY. The trail is really well maintained and you can see a lot of care and planning went into it.
One of the best trails in the lower peninsula. Expertly maintained and built and has portions that are well within beginner level as well as more advanced, technical terrain. Make sure you pay attention to the direction you’re supposed to ride as it changes every other day.
Great trail for anyone that wants to start mountain biking! The very first part of the trail is slightly technical but manageable if you're new to the sport. Also, there is a black diamond section of the trail, which is completely optional, and is loads of fun if you can maneuver the technical terrain.

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
