Confirmed from Papscanee Island Nature Preserve's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Quiet hiking area featuring trails, plus river views and shoreline access.
What runners say about Papscanee Island Nature Preserve
“This is such a nice walk, very easy trails and a great view of the water.”
“Beautiful, and when there are no trains passing by, very serene.”
“Easy trails with nice access to the river and good opportunities to see some wildlife.”
Glad to have found this gem. It's a nice quiet and easy way to enjoy the area. If your looking to go here, check the tide info. and shoot for low tide so you can walk along the river for great photo opportunities and more. As with any and all outdoor activities prep for ticks & mosquitos.
A shirt hike into a paradise for birds. The songs of so many birds can be heard loud and clear (when the train isn't flying at 80 mph down the tracks). The shoreline is accessible from the red trail or near the end of the main trail.
Scenic views just a stones throw away from East Greenbush and Rensselaer. Great trails to walk your dogs on.
You often don't have to look very far to enjoy the mystery and intrigue of nature, and this place is a perfect example of that. It's not hard to see why this place is considered sacred to the natives who live here.
Trail conditions & character
“Good variety of scenery (Medows, woods, river views) and trail cover (dirt, grass, and some gravel covered tire tracks).”
“Beautiful, and when there are no trains passing by, very serene.”
“The shoreline is pretty muddy so bring the right kind of shoes or boots to have the best time ever.”
“Both parking areas are very small so on a busy nice day make sure you go early.”
“Great place for my dog to sniff the sniffs and smell the smells.”
