Confirmed from Portage Lakefront & Riverwalk's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 6 mentions

🌾 quiet & peaceful 4 mentions

“Nice serene peaceful walk in a national park across from a steel mill.”

An amazing place 3 minutes off the Interstate! Plenty of parking, lots to explore, easy access to Lake Michigan, and you can easily see the Chicago skyline on clear days. Sunsets and sunrises on Lake Michigan almost never disappoint as long as they are not blocked by clouds.

★★★★★ — Aaron , Jul 2024

Nice serene peaceful walk in a national park across from a steel mill. Very interesting concept to see how nature and industry are separate but cohesive. The center has a snack food vendor, restrooms, gathering/meeting area, outdoor picnic tables and fireplace.

★★★★★ — Brad , Sep 2025

Use your blinders as you drive in, or amaze at our steel production facilities. But they're are two ends of the spectrum as you dive in. This place is a nature's gem. Some of the best dunes scenery with pines, oaks, and wildflowers galore. The beach could use more regular clean ups.

★★★★☆ — Tim , Jun 2026

Great spot for pictures! It is a long walk if you want to walk the whole pier so make sure you don't forget anything in your car. We came here to go fishing, didn't catch anything but enjoyed the scenery and got some sun! This place is part of the National Park so you do have to have a pass or pay before you park.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
  • Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
