Confirmed from Deer Trail Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Deer Trail Park

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (52 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

Next Level Trails funded the 2022/2023 Marquette Greenway Salt Creek connector. (edit) August 2023 Marquette Greenway connects Portage to State Road 149 in Burns Harbor. Engineering & grant work anticipate trail passing under the Norfolk Southern bridge and across Mnoke Praire toward Bailey Homestead.

★★★★★ — New , Aug 2023

Very nice, new, paved multi-use trail extends east from here to Navajo Lane & Hwy 149 in Burns Harbor. Features include a bridge over Salt Creek, an ADA-friendly switchback with a rest & viewing platform, and varied environments include oak woods, prairie, swamp and marsh.

★★★★☆ — David , Sep 2023

Nice paved walking trail from Portage to Burns Harbor. The Burns Harbor stretch is manicured much nicer than portage

★★★★☆ — Mark , Mar 2025

An excellent place for a picnic or a pleasant walk to the river. Watch for stickers!

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

  • At the trailheadrestrooms — reported by runners
  • Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
