Confirmed from Portales Walking Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Portales Walking Trail
Nice walking trail in Portales. Didn't even know this place existed until just recently. It's a gravel trail that goes in a loop. There's also lot of benches around the trail and it's nice to sit and listen to the quietness. The trail is on the west side of town and it's not very busy.
This is a great place to run, but watch out for the 🐕 💩 & I did see a rattlesnake 🐍 one day.
I have only been walking this trail for the last six months. It is well maintained. There are exercise stations scattered throughout that provide different exercise equipment. I’ve only seen one small black rattle snake, a huge jack rabbit & lots of birds.
Had a great time but remember there are snakes so bring protection and stay alert it's 1 mile all around in total so be careful because if you get bit its a long walk keep back your phone on you at all times and be cautious of strangers
Trail conditions & character
“It’s perfect for elderly walkers, joggers, families with strollers & dog walkers.”

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
