Confirmed from Prairie Center's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
A 300-acre prairie preserve with wetlands, woodlands & wildlife plus trails & educational programs.
What runners say about Prairie Center
“Gorgeous nature preserve with well-kept trails, picnic areas, and fishing spots.”
“Great hiking in a relatively quiet prairie park just down the road west from Lake Olathe.”
Great trail! This trail is very clearly marked and goes in several different directions. The trail is not paved. There is a small lake with picnic area less than a mile from trailhead.
Be prepared that there are inclines and declines in the gravel path as well as water crossings. The paths are easy to find but sporadically marked if that makes you nervous, good to be aware of. Definitely lots of little picnic tables and bathrooms located nearby parking lot.
No matter which entrance you take, it is a considerable walk out to the park/pond area, but completely worth it. Far enough out of the city that at night you can come out and stargaze. There is a stream near the pond that is fantastic to hike through as you wind your way down the path.
I love this trail very much and enjoy fishing the pond but over time the moss has grown out of control. I went this morning and my first cast was already snagged. I pulled moss out the pond every time I reeled in.
