Confirmed from Riverside Park Granite City Greenway's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Riverside Park Granite City Greenway

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (119 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

well-maintained 6 mentions

“As well maintained the cement is always in good shape and The Grass Is Always trimmed with plenty of water access.”

🏞️ beautiful scenery 6 mentions

“Beautiful and very fun, just make sure to go when school is in if you don't want to be bothered by wild children”

🌳 shaded & cool 3 mentions

“There are some great shady spots to relax either on the grass or even in hammocks at one point.”

👟 good for all levels 2 mentions

“Very respectable of others on the path, people always move over, as everyone is at their own pace, and are of all ages!”

I love this trail. I've walked some of the trail before, but never the whole thing. Finally rode my bike on it this past week with my son and it was awesome. It's a fully paved trail that's a little over six and a half miles one way, if my GPS is accurate.

Brandon Throntons review is more of a summary of his character rather than this Greenway. I have been running and biking on it for a few years and I love it. As you go through the greenway the river runs along side it in view almost the entire 5 miles or so. The paved path goes under road bridges and over the river.

Loved this trail around Mt Airy. Easy and plenty of beautiful sights along the river.

★★★★★ — Gil , May 2023

We love this beautiful walkway! We visit this nice paved path everytime we vacation here. So nice and clean, and safe. Bicycle or hike or run. Very respectable of others on the path, people always move over, as everyone is at their own pace, and are of all ages! Very well manicured, shady and sunny.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🏞️ Scenic views 8 mentions

“Out and back it was about 13 miles, and we did it in about an hour and a 20 minutes, with two stops along the way to get a drink and view the spots.”

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfacePaved — asphalt or concrete. Fast and predictable, runnable year-round, and fine with a stroller
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
  • At the trailheadwater — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
