Confirmed from Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Stony trails over wetlands & grasslands, home to elk & birds of prey, around a former military site.

What runners say about Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (490 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 6 mentions

“The wind also hits this area very badly when there's a gusty day, but otherwise it gives you an absolutely gorgeous view of the rockies and the wind turbines.”

🌳 shaded & cool 3 mentions

“However there is absolutely no shade here; beware on hot sunny days.”

🌾 quiet & peaceful 3 mentions

“very peaceful, very nice trails.”

Glad I got to visit on opening day! Nice nascent trail system, and great views all around. I particularly enjoyed the old Lindsay Ranch buildings! Regarding all the crazies who are screeching "cancer for all" ignore them. Read for yourself what has been done to remediate this site.

very peaceful, very nice trails. it can be pretty cold if you get out of the car (in the fall/winter) but you can stay in and still enjoy the beauty of the area. it’s also a great spot to take pictures!

★★★★★ — Miranda , Dec 2018

One of the least popular places to walk around Denver which is why I love it, usually not too busy. However there is absolutely no shade here; beware on hot sunny days.

★★★★★ — Ashley , Jul 2019

Such a beautiful hike. Lots of flats with small inclines. Easy enough for the whole family to do together ❤️

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
