Confirmed from San Gabriel River Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about San Gabriel River Trail

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (82 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

well-maintained 3 mentions
🏞️ beautiful scenery 6 mentions

“That's where I discovered my love for cycling; it will always be a beautiful memory of Long Beach, California.”

River crossings are difficult when the water is high. As of 4/22/23 the water was 4.5 feet and rushing at its height. Do not underestimate the force. Great hike and excellent scenery

San Gabriel River bike trail is my riding grounds,, great for cycling, running, hiking or even just walking with your dog ,, just beware that they're coyotes and bobcats throughout the trail,, recommend to always carry pepper spray just to be safe as well as insect repellent because they're a lot of mosquitoes...

Excellent trail, lots of fun, and near water. Just fantastic. Be aware you might encounter wildlife in the area. We have seen bears, coyotes, deer, hares, just beautiful!

Biking running walking, really nice. On weekends be careful with cyclists packs as sometimes they are silly enough to not be aware of other trail users.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🏞️ Scenic views 8 mentions

“After raining, there will be waterfalls on the road side before entering Encanto Wilderness Park (crossing side).”

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
