Confirmed from Smith Mountain Fire Tower's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

“Always a beautiful place for getting away and the closest mountain in my area.”

🪧 well-marked 2 mentions

“It is well marked on the way in but the blazes are inconsistent on the way out.”

We had a great time on the hike to the fire tower. Fun hike up the mountain with a place to sit and relax at the top. The fire tower is a little scary if you are afraid of heights but all together pretty easy. Great views of Lake Martin from the tower. Some spots of the trails are narrow as you climb around rock.

★★★★★ — Ethan , Jul 2022

Fun and moderately challenging hike. Definitely bring plenty of cold drink in the summer. The trail to the tower is only about a lil over 2 miles long and really fun but lots of up and down hill treks so be ready!

★★★★★ — Roika , Jul 2023

Stunning view of the lake from those rock formations. Then the view from the tower is phenomenal! It’s a very short hike.

★★★★★ — Suzette , Jun 2024

Love this hike. Little smith mountain trail, cliffs along lake and firetower at sunset is a must. Great place to revisit over and over with kids.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
