Confirmed from South Oak Creek Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about South Oak Creek Trailhead

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (273 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 13 mentions

“Gorgeous scenery year round, but would recommend hiking October- May or you experience extremely hot temperatures.”

👟 good for all levels 2 mentions

“I saw families, people of all ages and furry friends.”

Love all the trails near Red Rock and inside the few area. Snake was a surprise although not a rattlesnake I know they are also out there! May flowers were beautiful

★★★★★ — Patricia , Aug 2023

The early part of the trail (from car to mountain base) is pretty flat so you might not realize the distance you’ve journeyed until you wish you brought more water. Once you get to the mountain base & shade, it’s a nice reprieve. Dogs love it, and there’s plenty that venture this trail.

★★★★☆ — Phila , Feb 2022

Beautiful mountains/cliffs, soil, rocks and plants/flowers! I spent around 5-6 hours walking this trail and loved everything about it, especially that it was well worn and easy to follow. I was lucky enough to see some bighorn sheep way up the mountainside, which was incredible because the cliffs were so steep!

★★★★★ — John , Sep 2018

This trail splits off into many fantastical journeys - it’s so drop dead gorgeous everywhere! I highly recommend it as I go every single Sunday for the drum circle! Epic times - surrounded by towering mountains :)

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🏞️ Scenic views 20 mentions

“I’d recommend this to anyone and everyone looking for marvelous views that make you forget a big city is just a short drive away.”

  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
