Confirmed from Tunnel Green's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Park featuring a cave, trails, and a dog park, plus athletic facilities.
What runners say about Tunnel Green
“Clean place to take the family for a picnic, have some outdoor sporting events and have fun”
Cool tunnel- you can park here at the ballfields and walk back behind and there's a staircase to reach the trail to the tunnel. There's also a cute little dog park right there that seemed nice!
Tunnel Green (Hemphield Tunnel) is located in Wheeling, West Virginia. It is a historical tunnel dating back before 1904. The tunnel was rebuilt in 1904. To get here I parked at the dog park nearby. There is a baseball field that you cross and you will see steps across the field. Go up the stairs and go to the right.
Cool trail, plenty of graffiti in the tunnel and nice landscape apart from the highway. Only real downside is that wheeling smells like rotten eggs.
Nice to preserve a part of our history with a walking trail. I just hope they keep up with the tunnel. Saw some fresh rubble on the pathway.

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfacePaved — asphalt or concrete. Fast and predictable, runnable year-round, and fine with a stroller
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadrestrooms — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
