Confirmed from Union Canal, Bicycle & Walking Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Union Canal, Bicycle & Walking Trail

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (119 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

well-maintained 5 mentions

“Its very well kept for the most part and you can take this trail pretty far.”

🏞️ beautiful scenery 7 mentions

“Great trail, beautiful, no real inclines you have to struggle to get up, basically flat and great for coasting, small 4 mile ride following the river to Reading”

Only bike this path if you are looking for a leisurely ride with beautiful scenery. The path is very well maintained, but it's only 8-10 feet wide. It's full of blind corners, and even though it was an early weekday afternoon, plenty of people on the trail.

★★★★☆ — Ron , Jun 2022

Fun place to go for a spin on the bike. The trail itself is slightly more entertaining than the average rail-trail. Mostly shaded with minimal street crossings. Nice views and several historic sites to explore.

I love this trail. I've been coming here for years. Although it's been awhile since I've been able to get here (relocation) I'm back in the area and once I've built my stamina back to what it used to be I can't wait to get onto the newish to me section that takes you over to the spill way...

Some great views while riding on the path. You always run into some hikers and runners. Your occasional family going out for a nature walk. Is super cold so only we were bracing the cold on bikes but very joyful ride.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfaceCrushed gravel — the rail-trail classic: softer than asphalt, still smooth enough for tempo work
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
