Confirmed from Ventura Hills Nature Preserve's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Ventura Hills Nature Preserve
“Definitely not a place for an easy stroll, but it's so gorgeous and worth the effort!”
The Ventura Hills Nature Preserve is very beautiful. I love the many types of wildflowers, as well as the amazing views. We are very fortunate to have public access to this preserve, especially since it is so close to town.
Gorgeous trail. 101 is a perfect switchback to the top, careful taking 102 down if you struggle with balance it can be a bit steep… No shade, wear a hat :)
Really badass views can see all the beach side just make sure to take a picture of the map cause these trails are serious steep inclines and bunch of rugged rocky terrain. Make sure to bring enough water if you need it. I didn't hike all the trail I just went to the view point and back down but that alone was hard.
Steep hiking, great for a proper workout. Dogs are OK if on leash. No e bikes. Thank you Ventura land trust ✌🏻

Plan your run at Ventura Hills Nature Preserve
The practical stuff
- AccessDawn to dusk — the gates close, so do not plan a run that finishes after dark
- SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
