Confirmed from West Cuesta Ridge Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Popular area for hiking and mountain biking featuring canyons, old train bridges, and views of the Euks.
What runners say about West Cuesta Ridge Trailhead
“Beautiful scenic overlooks and a wide fire road that let's you drive/ ride through the botanical forest - on a clear day you can see Morro rock”
You can drive on this road for 7.3 miles before you hit a gate, but a car with higher suspension is recommended. From the gate the hike to Cerro Alto is phenomenal.
A really easy and gorgeous hike. Almost entirely paved with many little trails going off the main ones. Be aware that there will be cars and bikers going up and down the ridge as well. We've never encountered aggressive wildlife but we have been bit up by skeeters so wear your citronella!
Great hike or bike along the west side of Cuesta ridge. Plenty of parking off of the highway and easy access. The trail is pretty exposed as it is primarily a fire/access road so be covered or wear plenty of sunscreen. Beautiful views of north and south county.
Great bike ride for intermediate experience riders. Some steep climbs, hard clay dirt, rock, some gravel. Able to see Santa Margarita, Serrano, Morro Rock, and San Luis Obispo.

“I would say it was easy, but there is enough elevation gain and rutting in the trail once it turns to a dirt road that I can’t.”
“Convenient trailhead to SLO, but parking is somewhat limited to the left when turning off the freeway.”
“Paved for the first mile then dirt, the last mile to the tower gets steep and rough.”
“Gravel bike still handled it fine but I wished I was on something with suspension.”
“It's steep, but wide open (not a single track) so a wonderful place to give your RadRover a spin!”
